11.
A glance at my watch sent another jolt through me. 2:00 AM already.
When Aubrey and I stepped outside Snyder & Associates, Philadelphia was dark and quiet. We had no car now, and Aubrey didnât want to take a cab and create a potential witness, so we walked to a diner that was open twenty-four hours a day, found a booth in a corner, and went over the plan, looking at it from every angle.
It was ludicrous. Insane. Completely immoral.
Just like Aubrey.
When dawn finally broke across the Philly skyline visible through the dinerâs plate glass windows, the place started to fill up. Just seeing other peopleânormal people, grabbing a bite to eat on their way to their jobsâwas a relief. We ordered omelets and fresh coffee. The rich aroma had a calming effect on me. I tried to enjoy it because I knew it wouldnât last long.
Aubrey couldnât allow me even a brief respite. Before Iâd finished half of my breakfast, she pushed my mobile phone across the table to me. âItâs time.â
âWhat makes you think sheâll even be available?â I said. âShe might have plans.â
Aubrey shrugged. âThen you make her change them.â
I sighed and called Jessie Blackâs mobile number, which sheâd shared with me as a professional courtesy the first time we were adversaries in a trial. It rang once, twice, and I thought for sure it would go to voicemail. It was barely six in the morning. She was probably asleep. I hoped she was.
âThis is Jessica Black.â The voice on the phone was loud, crisp, and very much awake. Shit.
âHi, Jessie. Itâs Dylan Wood. Sorry to disturb you so early in the morning.â
âThatâs okay.â I heard a gurgle as she drank something, probably her own morning coffee. Iâd never met a lawyer who wasnât a caffeine junkie. âIs this about the Robinson trial?â
âNot exactly. I mean, sort of.â I launched into the bullshit story Aubrey and I had cooked up. âListen, obviously Iâm disappointed about the verdict. But I was really impressed by you. I was hoping we could grab some breakfast and ... I donât know ... talk shop. Iâd love to pick your brain.â And your fingerprints, I thought grimly, with a glance at Aubrey.
âYou mean today? I was planning on getting some work done this morning. It always seems like thereâs a mountain of neglected matters that I need to catch up on after a trial ends.â
âI totally understand.â
âWeâll do it another time,â Jessie said.
Aubreyâs stare felt like a weight pressing down on my chest. âWell, except, Iâve got a vacation planned,â I said. I blurted the words just to keep her from hanging up. âAnd Iâd really like to talk to you before I leave, while the trial is still fresh in my mind. Maybe we could just meet for a few minutes? Iâll buy you a cup of coffee.â
Jessie was silent for a few seconds, and I had to check my phoneâs screen to make sure she hadnât disconnected. Then her voice came back.
